The new maritime mobile transmission standard in the VHF band is specified in the ITU-M2092 standard. In cooperation with the Institute for Communication and Navigation of the German Aerospace Center (DLR), parts of the terrestrial link were realized with the USRP platform ETTUS B210.
In maritime communication the AIS (Automatic Identification System) is used since 2003 to avoid collisions between ships. In addition to this core functionality, the AIS is employed to exchange other non-safety-critical data. This leads in some places to an overload in the AIS. Therefore, a new system has been standardized under the name VDES for several years. VDES stands for the VHF Data Exchange System. VDES allows for the first time in maritime communication higher modulation methods, such as 16-QAM, and relies on a Turbo code as error protection method.
